CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIP. (Notes by “The Bowler.”) On Saturday afternoon last A further match was played on the Masterton Club’s green, for the Wairarapa Centre Champion Fours. The holders, J. Campbell, W. Reid, W. Hendry and H. N.<Freeman (s), of the Masterton Club, met the challengers, Simpson, Brown, Osborne and Smith (s), of the Park Club. The weather was perfect for bowling, and the green was in excellent order. The match was an interesting one and some good play on both sides was witnessed. In the first eleven heads, the score board showed that only 12 points had been scored. The details of the game are as follow: —On the sixth head Masterton led by 2 points, and on the eighth head, had the same lead, the scores being: Masterton. 5, Park 3. Masterton increased its lead to 4 points on the eleventh head, but on the fifteenth head the difference was 6 points in favour of Masterton. The game concluded on the 21st head with Masterton winning by a majority of 8 points, the final scores being: Masterton 20, Park 12. CLUB CHAMPION FOURS. From time to time we hear various discussions as to the best method of clubs selecting its champion fours. Some members incline to the opinion that the champion fours should be selected on the classification system, and others say that skips should select their own teams. A sports writer has the following remarks on the subject: The Victoria Club adopted individual classification in its fours championship, and sent forward to the centre championship a graded four, each member of the four having a place according to his grading in the club. A lead played as lead, a two as two, and so on.
That is an idea which certainly dees away with the packing of teams, and, what is more, it widens the field of opportunity. But it still does not find the best four players in a club, which may be taken as the object of a champion of champions content. RINKS TOURNEY.
