GREYTOWN
S.M. COURT A SHORT SITTING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over a short sitting of the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Ekiri Pohatu Matia was charged with having shot a cow valued at £B, the property of H. Maneheira. Constable Gregor, who conducted the prosecution, stated that the cow had strayed into defendant’s garden. He was annoyed and shot it with a service rifle. Mr R. R. Burridge appeared for ■defendant and entered a plea of guilty. The intention of the defendant was merely to frighten the cow. He fired low, but hit the cow’s udder. The land in question was not fenced, and being owned by several Maoris, no one would shoulder the responsibility of fencing the land. Mr Burridge said that the defendant was quick tempered and had acted in haste, but had no criminal intent. The Magistrate pointed out that the offence was a serious one, the penalty being up to 14 years’ imprisonment. He fined defendant £5 with costs 10s, and ordered him to pay the value of the cow (£8). BOWLING GRADY MEDALS. H. Rolls and J. McNamara, of the ■Featherston Club, visited the Greytown green last evening and played N. McLeod and W. Higgison, the present holders of the Grady Medals. The game was fairly even in the first half, but the Greytown pair proved themselves superior in the second half and won by a comfortable margin. TOWN HALL “QUIET WEDDING.” An outstanding comedy, “Quiet Wedding,” with an English cast, will be shown at the matinee tomorrow afternoon and in the evening.
