VEGETABLE GROWING

PRODUCTION FROM GREYTOWN AREA. / OVER 400.000L85. TO DATE. Over 400,0001b5. of vegetables of 18 kinds have been produced to date on the Service Vegetable Production Area, Greytown, since operations started on October 1 last. The area under production is 96 acres and 30 acres are now being sown for the second time. The scheme is under the supervision of Mr N. Lamont, of the Department of Agriculture, Masterton. The aim is to produce an even quantity of vegetables every month of the year and in this connection something is being tackled which has never been attempted in the district before, as, it is pointed out, most market gardeners are concerned more with producing vegetables at the most profitable periods rather than throughout the year. The first sowings were made on October 1 and the initial deliveries were made in December. The vegetables grown on the arfea are: Beans, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, cucumber, lettuce, marrows, parsnips, peas, pumpkins, radishes, silver beet, spinach, spring onions, swedes, turnips and tomatoes. The results achieved are considered to be remarkably good and give evidence of what can be done on systematic lines of production.
