WAR PRISONERS
OVER 8,000 NEW ZEALANDERS IN AXIS HANDS SOME RECENT CAPTURES IN GREECE, IRREGUULAR MAILS FROM ITALY. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, March 18. The prisoners-of-war department of New Zealand House states that the New Zealanders from all forces, including the Merchant Navy, known to be prisoners in Axis hands now total just over 8000. The number of those previously reported missing has been reduced considerably. There were a number of New Zealanders reported missing in the Greek campaign who held out in the hills for 16 months. Some were recently captured by the Italians and are interned in Italy. They include Private G. T. Tong (Levin) and Private R. E. Gain (Ponsonby). It is hoped that they may be able to supply the names of other New Zealanders who are still uncaptured. On the whole, it is stated, communications with prisoners are quite good, though in some camps prisoners were recently prevented from communicating direct with the Government offices, their letters having to go through the International Red Cross, resulting in delay. Letters from Italy arrive irregularly, some taking a few weeks and others months.
