JOHN BULL CALLING
DISTRICT PATRIOTIC APPEAL. The following is an extract from the London “Sunday Chronicle”: — “I have just received a letter from my son, in which he tells of the generosity of the people of New Zealand to our men of the Merchant Navy. When his ship reached Wellington there were sent on board ten cases of apples and a parcel for each man of the crew of 70. Each parcel contained tobacco, cigarettes, papers, shaving soap, chocolates and sweets, and a card bearing this message; ‘This is a gift of appreciation and best wishes from the people of New Zealand, sent through the Overseas Seamen’s Gift Committee, Wellington.’ “Other ships of the Merchant Navy would no doubt be treated the same way. The men regretted very much that they had no opportunity to make any reply thanking the people of New Zealand for their kindliness: hence my request to have it made public through the columns of the ‘Sunday Chronicle.’ ” The work of the Overseas Seamen’s Gift Committee, says a statement by the District Patriotic Committee, is financed by the National Patriotic Fund Board, but this year only sixty people in Masterton can say they helped John Bull.
