CARTERTON
ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) P.G, Bro, J. A. Stevens, N.G., presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge last evening. Sick pay amounting to £7 was passed for payment. A letter was received from P.G. Bro. A. R. Tankersley, a signalman in the forces in the Middle East, describing the localities which he had visited. The resignation of Sister C. E. George as minute secretary, was received with regret. It was announced that she would be leaving the district in April. The secretary reported upon the business transacted at the annual district conference held in Wellington and was accorded a vote of thanks. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ELECTION OF OFFICERS. At a meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute there was a good attendance of members. Mrs W. A. Pinfold presided. The proposal to hold a general conference in two sections was agreed to, and it was decided to send a delegate to the North Island section. After the business of the ordinary meeting had been dealt with, the annual meeting was held at which the election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Miss O. W. Welters; hon. secretary, Mrs L. Hurndell; committee, Mesdames J. Archer, Herb. Goodin, M. H. Hume, H. Knutson, L. J. Loftus, W. A. Pinfold, E. M. Pink, V. L. Robinson, G. Steffert, M. Savill and R. P. Wakelin. The tellers for the election were Miss Davies and Mr E. McKenzie, who were thanked for their services and presented with a memento. The points prize for the competitions held during the year was won by Mrs A. T. Hawke, with 55 points, Mrs S. Swan being second with 26 points. The potatoes grown for competition -were on view, Mrs H. Knutson proving the winner with the good result of 35 lbs. grown from 11b. of seed. DANCE AT PARKVALE PRESENTATIONS TO SOLDIER. The Parkvale Hall was crowded last evening, the occasion being a dance and presentation to Pte. Thos Orr, of Ahiaruhe. A most enjoyable time was spent to music played by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr V. J. Ashton, assisted by Mr C. Jensen, Junr. Much appreciated extras were played by Miss Mary Herrick and others. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr and Miss Butcher. The winners of the cards were Mrs H. Goodin and Mr Gordon. Goodin, the prizes having been donated by the W.F.C.A., L. M. Clark, Stubbs’ Pharmacy and Mr H. J. McKenzie. Supper was provided and supervised by a committee of Parkvale and district ladies. During the evening four presentations were made to the guest of the evening. On behalf of the residents of the district, Mr C. Jensen asked Pte. Orr to accept a cheque; Mr J. Sage, on behalf of Ahiaruhe residents, gave him a toilet set; Mr W. Campin, Junr., on behalf of the Young Farmers’ Club, handed him a hold-all, and Mrs D. N. Adams, on behalf of the Women’s Institute, presented him with a parcel of woollies. Pts. Orr returned his sincere thanks for the gifts. Mr Taverner, on behalf of the Carterton and District Patriotic Committee, made an appeal to dance and card players to strongly support the patriotic effort now being launched. He stated that canvassers would visit the district shortly to solicit donations. - Personal Items. Mr F. Jackson, Pembroke Street, Carterton, has found it necessary to enter the Greytown Hospital for medical treatment. P. and A. Society. A meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society will be held next Saturday at 10.30 a.m. St. Patrick’s Night Gathering. At the State Theatre, Carterton, tomorrow night a concert and dance will be held. The concert will be given by Convent pupils and the Papawai Maori Party. The proceeds will go toward earthquake restoration funds in connection with the Convent School. Udy’s Orchestra will provide the music and supper will be provided. REGENT THEATRE “RAGE IN HEAVEN.” Tonight’s programme will be headed by the sensational drama, “Rage in Heaven,” ’starring Robert Montgomery and Ingrid Bergman.--
