BOWLING / PAIRS TOURNAMENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) On a fast green on Saturday members of the Carterton Bowling Club played a handicap 'pairs tournament. The winning skip was H. King, who went through without a loss, scoring 42 points. J. Newbould was runnerup with 2 wins and a loss, 51 points. W. H. Hall was the most successful lead, scoring 54 points, R. Foss being runner-up with 44 points. Eight players from the Island Bay Ladies’ Club will play a match against the Carterton ladies at Carterton on March 21. \ CLAREVILLE SCHOOL ANNUAL PICNIC AND RACES. The annual picnic in connection with the Clareville State School was held on Saturday in beautiful weather and a most enjoyable day was spent by the children, parents and visitors. The annual general meeting of the Carterton branch of the Red Cross Society will be held in the Dalefield Dairy Co’s, building on Wednesday next at 8 o’clock, at which the election of officers for the ensuing year will take place. Power of Fungus Growth. A Dalefield dairy farmer reports that during a recent rainstorm a puffball commenced to grow inside a four-inch drainpipe, which was standing on its end. The fungus grew part of the way up into the pipe and finding the confines of the pipe insufficient for its growth, split the pipe in two pieces. Tar Sealing. The Wairarapa South County workmen made a start this morning to tar seal the road into the Dalefield Dairy Co’s, cheese factory. Dance at Parkvale. There should be a large attendance at the dance to be held in the Parkvale Hall tonight. Private T Orr, of Ahiaruhe, will be the guest, of honour. The proceeds from the danefe will go toward the recreation fund of the Carterton District High School. Patriotic Dance. The dance held in the State Theatre, Carterton, on Saturday evening, was well attended and was most enjoyable. Splendid music was provided by the combined orchestras of Messrs T. Udy and F. Poole. The Maori war effort fund, for which the dances are held each Saturday, should benefit considerably. Another dance will be held on Saturday. Personal Items. Visitors to Carterton over the weekend at the bowling green were Mr Boyne, late postmaster at Carterton, and Mr Inder, of Auckland, who for several years was president of the Auckland Bowling Centre. Fence on Fire. The Fire Brigade was called out yesterday afternoon to a fire at the rear of the brewery, a fence being discovered alight. The outbreak was soon extinguished by the brigade. REGENT THEATRE “ALOMA OF THE SOUTH SEAS.“ . “Aloma of the South Seas” will be finally shown tonight, the leading roles in this excellent drama being in the hands of Dorothy Lamour and Jon Hall.
