SWIMMING INTER-CLUB CONTESTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the weekly meeting of the Carterton Swimming Club a number of swimmers from Masterton competed with success. There was a large attendance, and the Carterton junior band, under their conductor, Mr W. Spooner, played a number of muchappreciated selections. Through the generosity of Mr C. K. Goodin a loud speaker was installed at the baths and was appreciated. The results were as follow: — 50 yards district championship: Clay (Masterton), 1; Sexton (Masterton), 2; B. Hemi (Carterton), 3. Time, 13 4-ssecs. 50 yards ladies’ handicap: A. Fairbrother (Carterton), 1; M. Stewart (Masterton), 2; J. Paterson- (Carter ton), 3. Time, 44secs. Senior dive: . Desmond (Carterton), 1; D. McKenzie (Carterton), 2; D. Stewart (Masterton), 3. E.P.S. Trial. At 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon a trial of all units of the Carterton E.P.S. was held. As soon after the alarm was, given, all unit committees, etc., reported for duty to their respective areas wearing their arm bands. Everything worked fairly satisfactorily and the training given the various units was particularly useful. The public co-operated with a few exceptions. The various units stations carried out their work well. Shelters were provided at Carrington and Memorial Square. Only through traffic was allowed and in this connection the traffic officers did their work efficiently. The “all clear” signal was given in an hour. . . . ■ Women's Division. At a meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, a vote of condolence was passed to Mesdames H. Quin, George and McKenzie, who had suffered bereavements. A cheque for £l7 Is, the proceeds of the children’s party held at New Year, was donated to the funds of the Merchant Service. The competitions resulted as follows: —Best bloom: Mrs Geo. Couper, 1,2 and 3. Best shrub: Mrs H. Hodder 1, Mrs G. Couper 2 and 3. Personal Items. Mrs Mosen, of Wanganui, was a visitor to Carterton on Monday and was the guest of Mrs C. Holland, Garrison Street. It is 30 years since Mrs Mosen (nee Carter) was in Carterton, being a resident here at that time. Prior to returning to his unit, Corporal W. D. Allen was the recipient of a fountain pen and writing case, the presentation being made by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, on behalf of the citizens of Carterton. Mrs H. Hodder, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, handed Corporal Allen a parcel of woollen garments. REGENT THEATRE “BALALAIKA.” The outstanding musical comedy, “Balalaika,” will be finally shown tonight, with Nelson Eddy, Ilona Massey and Frank Morgan in the chief roles.
