RED CROSS SOCIETY
MASTERTON SUB-CENTRE MONTHLY MEETING. REPORTS ON MANY ACTIVITIES. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society held in the Red Cross Sewing Rooms was presided over by Mrs G. G. Tolhurst. Accounts for £45 ss. were passed. Included in this sum was an amount for a new machine with electric motor which was required by the hospital group in order to be able to cope with the amount of work on hand. A letter was received from the Voluntary Aid secretary stating that no voluntary aid cound approach either Miss Willis, Director of Overseas Nursing or Miss Lambie Director of N.Z. Nursing Service for information regarding overseas service but must make all enquiries through the Red Cross Society. ->U*. A letter received from the Cwfre expressed appreciation of the sendee rendered by the Red Cross transport and the manner in which the members were upholding the true aim of the Red Cross Society, “the spirit of service.” The meeting approved a recommendation from the centre that each month two sub-centres should be responsible for the payment for the cakes supplied to the soldiers in the Masterton and Greytown Hospital each week. Permission was received from the Borough Council for the holding of a shop day on May 28 to raise funds for normal activities. The meeting decided that the annual meeting should be held on Wednesday March 17 and after this year the annual meeting would be fixed for the second Wednesday in March. The nominations of officers for the coming year must be lodged with the Secretary by March 10. The Sewing Group reported that a case of clothing for overseas had been sent away this month, also a parcel of garments for distressed seamen. All old material was now used up and work would consist of making garments from new material now in hand. It was decided that a case of goods be sent to St Barnabas Home Wellington, where babies and childrens clothes were urgently needed. The donation of a carpet sweeper for the sewing room by Mrs and Miss Sim was much appreciated. The following donors were also thanked for parcels sent in: Mesdames Norman, Dunderdale, Jansen, McCalmont, C,M.G. and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The hospital group, it was reported, had completed 30 heavy dressinggowns and 14 pairs of pyjamas. The group was grateful for parcels of material received bUjt was still urgently needing red material that could be boiled. Strips of this material about 7 ‘inches long by 1| inches wide were used for hospital requirements. The new machine was proving a great blessing, particularly for the making of heavy dressing-gowns. All other groups reported that th'S* were busily carrying on their usual Activities. Thirty knitted garments had been completed and at the moment there was a call for many pairs of socks for prisoner of war parcels. Mrs W. H. The meeting approved of the following recommendation being forwarded to the North Island Voluntary Aid Committee meeting for discussion:. “That for the duration of the war centres and sub-centres be requested to refrain from forwarding (except under extremely exceptional circumstances) remits to the North Island Voluntary Aid Committee meetings concerning uniforms and badges and that all centres and sub-centres make a special effort to make do with the uniforms and badges now permitted under regulations, during this period.” ■
