PARLIAMENT
OFFICIAL OPENING FORMAL BUSINESS TRANSACTED. NEW MEMBER SWORN IN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. After the official opening of Parliament yesterday afternoon, members of the House of Representatives returned to their own Chamber, where formal business Was transacted and tributes were paid to former legislators who had died since Parliament last met. These were Mr W. H. P. Barber, Wellington, Mr G. A. Marchant, Taranaki, former members of the House. Resolutions of appreciation of their services and sympathy with the relatives were adopted. The new member for Christchurch East, Miss Mabel Howard, was sworn in by the Speaker, Mr-Barnard, her sponsors being the senior and junior Government whips, Mr Richards (Roskill) and Mr Coleman (Gisborne). She returned to the seat allotted her on the back row of the cross-benches amid applause. Mr Langstone, M.P. for Waimarino, who recently resigned from the Ministry, has vacated his old seat in the ministerial group of benches and moved to a seat in the cross-benches which he shares with Mr McCombs (Lyttelton). This seat was previously occupied by Mr Coleman, who has shifted into a bench with Mr Richards. The House rose at 3.25 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. today.
