OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
“SMALL BOV MENACE” (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln their struggle for freedom the Allies have stretched out their hands to America for help. “Give us this—give us that,” they say, and she has responded magnificently. Now that we have her sons in our midst I wish to draw the attention of parents to the small boy menace. With hands outstretched, the small boys say: “Give me this —give me that” and with the same generosity of their country the American soldiers respond with money or kind. These men have been through bad times on Guadalcanal and we do not wish them to go through fresh ones here. In time the small boy menace becomes a persecution, as it already has in the Middle East. We expect our boys to be above copying the actions of the well-known unprincipled “wog.” Failing parental control, a timely word from the headmasters of the various schools may have the desired effect. —I am, etc., ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENCE. Masterton, February 20. The action recommended in the above letter, publication of which has been inadvertently delayed, has already been taken by headmasters and others.—Ed.
