A Nazi flag is a much-prized memento of a Gisborne family, a member of which obtained it near Tobruk in tne Bth Army’s pursuit of Rommel. In a letter written in the Western Desert, the writer, a corporal in a transport unit, gives a brief description of how he got the flag. He saw a big German staff car going at high speed, and stopped it' with a burst of fire. Out jumped a German colonel, who spoke good English. The corporal used a hand grenade to destroy the efficiency of the car, an action which caused him momentary misgivings, for, he, said, the machine was an excellent one, which would cost £4OOO in New Zealand. I got rid of the colonel that afternoon," the writer continued. ‘‘Before he left he thanked me—l suppose for not killing him—and said that as he was my prisoner he would like me to have his fltg, which I took.” The flag measured roughly six feet by three feet. It is rde, with a large white circle, superimposed on which is the swastika. It is made of synthetic fabric, which is still in good order. There are a few grease marks on the flag.
