HOSPITAL ORDERLIES
AN ACUTE SHORTAGE REPORTED WAIRARAPA BOARD DECISION. TO APPEAL FOR RESERVISTS. “It is impossible to get men as hospital ordei'lies. I have advertised all over New Zealand,” stated Mr Norman Lee, managing-secretary of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, at today’s meeting of the Hoard. Mr Lee reported to the board that appeals had been, lodged against the calling up for serivce of the accountant at the Masterton Hospital and two orderlies at the Greytown Hospital. Mrs S. Fletcher said it should not be the board’s policy to appeal for men. ’ Mr Lee: “Well, we can’t get labour.” Mrs Fletcher: “There are men coming back from overseas.” Mr A. Clark; “Are they qualified?” Mrs Fletcher: “No qualifications are needed for porters.” Mr Lee said that at the Grey town Hospital the orderlies had to bath the elderly patients. They did not have a pleasant job. Of the men appealed for one was 45 and the other was 43. Men had to do the work as nurses could not lift the men. Mr J. F. Thompson spoke in support of Mr Lee’s remarks. He said the word “porter” was a misnomer. Mr Lee’s action in appealing for the men was endorsed.
