UP & DOING
ALLIED AIR FORCES IN MEDITERRANEAN & NORTH AFRICA. MANY EFFECTIVE BLOWS STRUCK LONDON, February 14. Allied aircraft in the Mediterranean area have been up and doing again after the recent period of bad weather. American bombers and fighters flying across the Sicilian Straits yesterday came across a convoy of big Ger man transport aircraft, flying back to Italy. Although there were only seven American machines, these accounted for at least six of the big enemy aircraft before their ammunition ran out. Another- six bombers and fighters were shot down over Tunisia during operations which took some of the pilots on “tank busting” and “transport busting” activities and others on bombing raids on Tunis and Bizerta. All these air activities cost the Allies two aircraft. American Middle East Liberator bombers were out again yesterday. They flew to Southern Italy and attacked targets at Naples and another centre. Aircraft from Malta made day and night sweeps over Sicily. One Allied aircraft is missing from all Middle East activities.
