RESCUE DINGHIES
NEW TYPE PRODUCED FOR R.A.F. ONE OF CONSIDERABLE SIZE. ALL AIR CREWS TO LEARN TO SWIM. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, February 14. New types of R.A.F. rubber rescue dinghies have completed their tests and are now being produced for general issue to air crews and shipborne fighter pilots, reports the “Sunday Express.” Type Q is designed to take a load of 1| tons and accommodates ten men. It is shaped like a rowing boat and has a light alloy telescopic mast, a waterproofed silk cotton mainsail, a foresail, duralumin rudder, pockets for compass and charts, an emergency pack, containing first-aid kit, provisions, and signalling gear. A squadron leader, who tested the type, sailed successfully in a gale, with five aboard. Type K is a one-man dinghy, carried on the pilot’s back, in a small waterproof pack. It also has a mast and sail.
The Air Ministry has decided that all future air crews must learn to swim.
