GREYTOWN

FLOOD DAMAGE WAIOHINE RIVER BREAKS BANKS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Waiohine River overflowed its banks during the night and did considerable damage at various points. Traffic across the road was held up far a time. At Mr Cadwallader’s farm the position caused considerable anxiety and settlers had to remove stock to safety during the night. The river broke its banks at Matdrawa and flooded the surrounding country and strained the bridge. The properties of Messrs Wiggins and Grigg were under water. The flood was at its worst about 11 o’clock last night, and the water in the river is now slowly receding. The new stop bank at the Waiohine Bridge suffered damage and a gang of men are at work oh it this morning. TOWN LANDS TRUST DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS. The monthly meeting of the Greytown Town Lands Trustees was held last night. There were present: Messrs H. G. Carter, W. H. Day, W. Grigg, H.J. Nightingale, A. H. York amt the secretary, Mr J. Kiernan. In the absence of the chairman, Mr F. Defines, Mr Carter presided. Accounts passed for payment amoufiting to £5O 3s 6d, mostly were in connection with earthquake repairs. The property overseer reported that damage had been done to the buildings at the Recreation Reserve. A sub-com-mittee was appointed to inspect the damage. False Fire Alarm. At the monthly meeting of the Greytown Fire Brigade, a letter was received from Constable Gregor in connection with a false fire alariri, stating that Joseph William Barnard had been fined £5 with court costs. TOWN HALL “SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN.” Tomorrow, at the matinee at 2.15 p.m., and again in the evening, there will be shown at the Town Hall an outstanding drama, “Shadow of the Thin Man,” with Myrna Loy and William Powell enacting the chief characters.
