HEAVY . FLOOD DAMAGE TO WATER INTAKE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The heaviest floods experienced in the Waingawa and Maungatiritiri rivers for many years resulted from the heavy rain in the Tararua ranges yesterday. The Wairarapa South County race overseer, Mr H. J. McKenzie, who was at the headworks yesterday afternoon found a very heavy volume of water pouring down both rivers. During the night the water had gone down a little but early this morning another heavy flood was running. On inspection he found the intake to the race from the river completely blocked and only a very small quantity of water going into the races. For some time past the town supply has been fed from the main race and this has been through the flood completely shut off. The only water now available for use in the town is that in the low pressure reservoir. The whole of the county workmen along with the water race staff left this morning for the headworks in order to carry out repairs, which will be difficulty to complete as the rivers are still in flood. Tons of debris will have to be removed to bring the water supply back to normal. The overseer hopes to have repairs sufficiently advanced this afternoon to allow of some water going into the head race. The position this morning appeared to be serious for the meatworks, the latter using about 100,000 gallons of water an hour. They have a reserve supply in a swamp reservoir and this will be used until the main water race has been brought into operation again. Demolition Work. Good progress is being made with the demolition of the top portion of Krahagen’s building, and it should not be long before the structure is made safe against any future earthquake. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Parkvale on Sunday. Personal Items. Tomorrow evening at the Dalefield Social Hall, Mr and Mrs A. H. Knowles, who were recently married, will be the guests of honour. The residents of the Dalefield district are sparing no pains to make the gathering a success. The proceeds will be used for providing parcels for the armed forces overseas. REGENT THEATRE “SIERRA SUE.” There will be a double feature programme at the Regent Theatre tonight. “Sierra Sue” is a musical-action hit, starring Gene Autry and Smiley Burnette, while “Among the Living” is a thrilling drama, with Albert Dekke?, Susan Hayward, Harry Casey and Frances Farmer in the principal roles.
