PATRIOTIC WORK
REPORT OF MASTERTON COMMITTEE ASSISTANCE ACKNOWLEDGED REVIEW OF YEAR’S OPERATIONS. The annual report of the Masterton Women’s Patriotic Committee states:— As it is a year since a report was published of the work done by the Masterton Women’s Patriotic Committee, a view is given of the operations of the committee during the past twelve months. This year the committee has packed and sent to men overseas 1137 parcels. Many letters of thanks have been received from the recipients of these parcels and they were particularly grateful for those which reached them in the desert. Unfortunately it was found impossible to procure locally sufficient goods for the parcels which were sent in September and December and the Wellington Committee packed these for us.
There has been, an urgent demand for hussifs this year and 2837 have been made by residents of Masterton and the surrounding districts and sent' to Wellington for issue to men just before going overseas. We Would particularly like to thank Mrs E. W. B. Hornabrook and Miss M. E. Robieson for their constant help in making these hussifs. During the last patriotic appeal a shop was run by this committee and the sum of £6Bl 14s was raised. A further effort made by this committee was the organising of a concert, which was so successful that it was repeated. The sum raised was £135. Supper was provided the performers by members of the committee. During the winter about 300 pairs of mittens were made from the tops of old woollen sox and sent to various camps. W,e were assisted in this work by the Townswomen’s Build, Methodist Guild ,and Salvation Army. Members of the committee repaired jerseys and football shorts for men in camp. Large supplies of wool have been received from Wellington this year and the following articles have been made: Caps 16, sox 179, mittens 579, pullovers 75, balaclavas 848, scarves 466; total, 2163.

A meeting of the Masterton and District Patriotic Committee will be held at an early date for the purpose of organising ways and means of filling the quota. As it is a year since an appeal was made for patriotic funds, it is hoped that the public will respond generously. The report is signed by Mrs J. O’Hara Smith, the hon secretary.
