IN RECENT DOGFIGHT
AS “BACK SEAT DRIVER” AIR COMMANDER AT MALTA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, February 9. Air Vice-Marshal Sir Keith Park, Air Commander of Malta, was recently in an aerial dogfight. He was the second pilot of a Beaufighter which five Focke-Wulf 190 s attacked. A battle developed between the Beaufighter and the enemy planes. The Beaufighter pumped lots of lead at them, but the Beaufighter’s engine was set on fire. The Focke-Wulfs then broke off the engagement and the Beaufighter returned to its base, 160 miles over the sea.
“I was only a back-seat driver,” said Air Vice-Marshal Park, “but I told the pilot to climb before his engine burned out. We got to 3,000 feet—just altitude enough to reach Malta.”
