WAR PRISONERS

IN HANDS OF JAPANESE.

SOME HOPE OF IMPROVEMENT IN CONDITIONS.

(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) RUGBY, February 9.

The Secretary for War (Sir James Grigg) replying to questions in the House of Commons regarding prisoners of war in Japan, said representatives of the Protecting Power and the International Red Cross Committee had now visited four camps in Japan, two in Korea and two camps and a hospital in Hong Kong. These camps all contain prisoners of war from the United Kingdom and Dominions.

“It is disclosed that prisoners are benefiting in health by their transfer to Japan and Korea from less healthy latitudes,” the Minister said, “and the detaining Power will not, I think, refuse to consider suggestions being made to secure an improvement in conditions.”
