MASTERTON PARK CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS. EXCESSIVE HEAT EXPERIENCED. There was again a good attendance of bowlers on the Masterton Park Bowling Club’s green including several members in uniform, and the vice-president of the Northcote Club, Auckland. The chief events were the semi-finals of the champion fours, and various rounds in the other championship games. Owing to the excessive heat, many players not taking part in the above events, were content to look on, and, unlike previous Saturdays, the greens were practically deserted after the conclusion of the early games. The games resulted as follow:— Championship fours: —Semi-finals: Darvill (Moore sub.), Spackman, J. C. Ewington, Kilgour (s) beat H. Dixon, Simpson, Leigh, Carstens (s), 18/13. Carstens opened the scoring but a 4,2, and two singles, gave Kilgour a lead of 8/2 on the sixth end. Carstens reduced this by scoring on the next four ends to be one down on the 10th, but from then on Kilgour scored consistently, winning eight of the remaining twelve ends. The other game was between Trevorrow, E. Brown (Carr sub.), G. Brown, H. Smith (s) and David, Garard, Duckworth, F. Dixon (s), the former winning 25/15, Dixon took the lead early,' scoring on the first seven ends, the board then reading 12/0, but two fours and two two’s found Smith only one behind on the 12th end. After tea a two to Smith gave him the lead for the first time in the game, but Dixon equalised on the next end, the board reading 14 all on the 14th end. Smith scored on six of the remaining seven ends to win after a disastrous start. Pairs: Darvill and Kilgour (s) beat Faulknor and Bell (s) 16/14 after a very evenly contested game. The scores were even on the 4th, 6th, Bth, 12th and 15th heads. On the 16th head the shot bowls could not be separated, and on the 19th head the score ..was 13 all. Duckworth and Jenkins (s) easily accounted for Darvill and Kilgour (s) by winning 27/19. Jenkins was 12 up on thd 4th end and led 22/5 on the 12th. Kilgour scored 14 points to his opponent’s 5 on the remaining nine ends, but the handicap was too great. Singles: Kilgour beat Trevorrow 19/17 aftei’ a most interesting game. Kilgour maintained a slight lead throughout the game until the 19th when the board read 15 all. but a four to Kilgour on the next end put the score beyond doubt, although Trevorrow almost equalised on the following end. O'Donnell beat H. Dixon 17/12. This game was even until the 16th end, when three consecutive two’s gave O'Donnell a good margin. Simpson beat O’Donnell 23/21. Simpson scored 4, two 3’s, and four 2’s early in the game and was leading 19/10 on the 13th head. O’Donnell made a wonderful recovery by taking the next five ends to equalise.
