BETTER OUTLOOK
IN CENTRAL TUNISIA ACCORDING TO LONDON “TIMES.” RESISTANCE TO VON ARNIM INCREASING. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, January 25. News from Tunisia, according to “The Times,” suggests an improvement. “Resistance to the strong pressure of General von Arnim’s armoured forces in Central Tunisia seems to be increasing,” it states, “though the Germans have made unwelcome gains. Enemy reports of a large American concentration at Tebahsa are suggestive of an impending counter-attack.” “The Times” adds that General Eisenhower must possess considerable American forces not yet heavily engaged, but points out that a general assault is dependent on an improvement .in the weather. ROMMEL’S RETREAT MAIN BODY PROBABLY ON MARETH LINE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY, January 25. While British troops are still advancing westwards, Rommel’s main troops have probably already reached the Mareth Line area, around Ben Gardene, and covering the positions around Medenin, states a Cairo correspondent. Rommel has left behind only a strong rearguard, to hinder the advance of {he British, who are in constant contact, while we are also advancing inland. Although Rommel will probably attempt to reinforce the positions he has rached, he will need to rest his men after their retreat of 1600 miles. MALTA REJOICES OVER FALL OF TRIPOLI. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, January 25. Malta celebrated the fall of Tripoli with processions through the streets, says a Cairo message. Tripoli’s fall apparently has done the Maltese more good than anything since the furious attack on the island was broken last year.
