AIRCRAFT BUSY
WIDELY EXTENDED ATTACKS ON ENEMY LAND AND SEA TARGETS SHIPS DESTROYED NORTH OF SICILY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, January 25. A Cairo communique states: “Yesterday our troops continued their advance to the west. Allied fighter-bombers continued their harassing . operations and attacked small shipping which attempted to escape from Zuara Harbour. In addition, a large-scale fighter bomber attack was carried out on the Ben Gardane landing ground. A Junkers 88 was shot down in combat. Other damage was inflicted on grounded aircraft. On the night of January 23 light bombers attacked landing grounds and started fires at Medenin. Dispersed vehicles in the frontier area were also successfully attacked. Palermo Harbour was bombed on the same night, and fires were started. Two southbound enemy merchantmen were torpedoed and set on fire by our aircraft north of Sicily. One broke in two, after an explosion. The other was left burning furiously. One escorting destroyer also received a direct bomb hit. Extensive intruder operations have been continued against shipping off Cape Bon and Pantellaria Island, and targets in Sicily and vehicles on the coastal road to Tunisia. Yesterday Allied fighter-bombers attacked various targets on the south coast of Sicily, and hits were scored on railway tracks and buildings. “From the above operations, two of our aircraft did not return.”
