HOSTILE TO VICHY

BULK OF FRENciI PEOPLE IN MARTINIQUE. GARRISON COMMANDER JOINS DE GAULLISTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) WASHINGTON, January 22. Fighting French headquarters have announced that Major Sarrat, Commander of the French garrison in Martinique, has escaped from there and joined the forces of the Fighting French. The announcement quoted Major Sarrat as saying that since the American landing in North Africa the bulk of the French people in Martinique have been openly hostile to the Vichy Government. Several hundred persons petitioned Admiral Robert, the French High Commissioner for Martinique, and urged the reentry of French Caribbeans into the fighting against the Axis.
