Jewish Centenary in New Zealand. The centenary not only of the establishment of the first Hebrew congregation in Wellington, but of the beginning of Jewish communal religious life in New Zealand, was observed by the holding of a special service in the Wellington Synagogue on Saturday. It marked an important stage in the history of Judaism in this country. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, forwarded a message extending to the congregation congratulations on the centenary, saying he joined with his colleagues and other sections of the community in offering sincere good wishes. From the Chief Rabbi in London was received a message invoking God’s blessing on the Wellington community, which had upheld Jewish loyalty and high civic ideals for 100 years. He fervently prayed that there would be opened a new century bringing rescue and salvation to the Jewish people who were being oppressed, and righteous peace among all nations. Messages were also received from the president of the Jewish War Memorial in Sydney, the Auckland Hebrew Congregation, the Christchurch Jewish community, and from Palmerston North.
