OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
THOSE CHIMNEYS (To the Editor) Sir,—l have read the many letters that have appeared in your correspondence column about the cost of these chimneys, and I wish to point out that the vital point has, in my opinion, not been alluded to. For instance, the Government magnanimously agreed to pay the costs, if the householder agreed later to return the amount. Well, Sir, I consider the Government should have paid the travelling expenses and let the men receive from the householder the actual cost of the work done. The Mayor- of Master ton, Mr Jordan, says, in effect: “Smile and pay the enormous costs of travelling, etc., expenses including board and lodging while the men are away from home.” The member for the district, of course, endorses what the Mayor says. Is that a fair deal? I had a dozen chimneys thrown down, as well as others damaged. It seems we are to thank the Government for nothing.— Yours,, etc., A SUFFERER. Greytown, December 23.
