OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
THOSE CHIMNEYS (To the Editor) Sir, —May I ask for a little space concerning “those chimneys.” During the rush to repair chimneys I laboured for a local “brickie.” One house had foui' chimneys down. The council repaired two at a cost of £24 10s. My mate and myself repaired the other two at a cost of £9 10s, and that price includes carriers’ charges for putting our gear on the job. We made good money. In both cases only cement and sand were not supplied by the owner. All four chimneys required the same amount of repairing. All were old style chimneys, and we cleaned up the mess after us, which the council men did not do. We rebuilt in the flashings. The council men did not. I know these facts are correct, as I have checked them in conversation with the owner. Mr Jordan complained that the spirit of the people is not what it was after the shake. Can he wonder at that, when people are being robbed in a time of misfortune, and they know they are being robbed? I have no axe to grind, as my chimneys stood the test. What will the harvest be for the lawyers? All people ask for is common justice.—l am, etc., FAIR PLAY. Masterton, Decembei’ 22.
