MAORI BOY DROWNED
ACCIDENT IN STREAM. HORSEDRiAWN FLOAT CAPSIZES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A half-caste Maori boy was drowned in a flooded branch of the Otaki River near Rangiuru at. about 11.30 on Saturday morning, when a horse-drawn float on which he and others were crossing the stream capsized. He was Delma Cootes, aged nine years. The lad was one of a party which included a Mr Elliott and his son and another adult. They were going haymaking, and when the float began crossing the stream, it got into a scour and capsized. Mr Elliott tried .to rescue the boy, and both were carried down by the fast-running water for about two chains. They were caught in a swirl near a groin and drawn under a log, Mr Elliott losing his hold of the boy, who was not seen again. Mr Elliott was able to regain the bank, where the two others had already found safety. The body of the victim had not been recovered yesterday.
