SURF TRAGEDY
MARRIED MAN DROWNED. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RESCUE TWO GIRLS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. While attempting to bring his young daughter and another girl out of the surf, where they had got into difficulties, a resident of Otaki was drowned at Otaki Beach late yesterday afternoon. The victim was Mr Noel George Sundgren, market gardener, aged about 37. The girls were bathing, when Mr Sundgren noticed that they were in distress. There was a moderate surf running at the time, with an undertow following a heavy sea on the previous day. He plunged into the water, while people on the beach, assisted by an American, manned a life-saving reel. The girls were rescued little the worse for their experience. It was only then that Mr Sundgren was seen to be missing. His body was found in the water, and was brought out on to the beach, where artificial respiration was tried for about two hours, but without success.
