SHETLAND ISLES AN INTERESTING ADDRESS, (“Times-Age” Special.) The pupils of Form I to V of the Eketahuna District High School recently heard an excellent address on the Shetland Islands, the speaker being Mr Magnus Priest. Mr Priest, who spent his early life in. Shetland, was able to give geographical, historical and per 4 - sonal facts in his talk, as well as sup plying illustrations, by means of lantern slides. Various phases touched upon were bird life, Shetland ponies, the midnight sun, fishing industry, peat stacks, ancient castles, Shetland wool and shawls, all accompanied by pictures on the screen. Mr Priest was thanked by Pat Stewart, a pupil, and by the headmaster, Mr A. B. Fordyce, for having provided such an interesting address. COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council there were present Councillors J. B. Carruthers (chairman), C. T. Richardson, F. M. Goggin, L. G. Houlbrooke, C. Davie, J. P. Petersen, H. N. Kebbell and A. J. Perry. Accounts amounting to £1603 3s Id were passed for payment. The chairman stated that he had been appointed a member of the special committee set up by the dental clinic committee to conduct negotiations for the restoration of the dental clinic in Eketahuna. The fee for the registration of dogs for the year 1943 was fixed at 2s 6d per dog, plus the charge of Is per dog for the supply of an approved disease remedy, a total charge of 3s 6d a dog. It was agreed that where circumstances permitted employees should bo released to assist with the work of hay making during the coming season. It was reported that the Hamua* Rongornai road had been graded, and running planks placed on the platform of the bridge, and that the Eketahuna- 4 Nireaha road had /been graded and the bridge decked with running planks. . The overseers reported that threb new culverts had been put in on Saunders Road and that some metalling had been done on the main highway in the Alfredton area. The Kararikl Road had been graded and patched. The lower section of the Pori Road had been metalled and a new culvert provided. The bridge on the Waihoki Road near Mr Herbert’s property had collapsed and had been temporarily repaired. _________
