GREYTOWN
GIRL GUIDES ANNUAL MEETING YESTERDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Carter-ton-Greytown Girl Guides’ Association was held in the Parish Flail yesterday afternoon. Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford (Provincial Commissioner), and Mrs C. Bidwill (District Commissioner) were present. Mrs J. F. Thompson occupied the chair. It was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs A. W. Horton, who is at present undergoing treatment in the Greytown Hospital. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs J. F. Thompson (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mesdames H. Jackson, H. D. Bayliss, J. Udy, N. Speedy and W. Pope; committee, Mesdames A. Johnson, N. Speedy, Pope, L. Fairbrother, and Misses I. Wiggins and O. Wolters; secretary, Mrs Gustofsen, Carterton (re-elected); auditor, Mr Fairbrother. In her annual report, Mrs C. Bidwill thanked Mrs Gustofsen for the way she has carried out her secretarial duties. She also referred to the outstanding work Mrs G. R. Jury had carried out for the Girl Guides of Greytown for so many years. Mrs M. Greathead’s work with the Brownie Pack was also deserving of praise as was that of Mrs Brazendale. Thanks were extended to Mrs J. F. Thompson, to the committee and all those who had helped in any way during the year with the Guide movement. Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford in the course of an address, said that clothes had been sent to Polish and British refugees. There was an appeal for clothes being made this year for Dr. Barnadp’s Homes. Reference was made also to the after-war Guide movement. Mrs Bidwill thanked Mrs Riddiford for her address. Afternoon tea was provided by the committee.
Bowling. The first games for the Gold Bars was played last evening when the holders, J. Reid and W. Higgison, defeated G. Burns and F. Dennes by a wide margin. On Saturday challenge games for the Dennes Medal and Silver Ferns will commence, and the final of the fours will also be played. i Personal Items. Miss D. Richards, of McMaster Street, is at present visiting Pahiatua. Mr C. T. Brooking, of Hokitika, has been selected to fill the vacancy on the staff of the secondary department of the Greytown District High School. Soldiers' Honoured. A most enjoyable time was spent at a social gathering held at the home of Mr and Mrs Will Haley, Kuratawhiti Street. Cards were played and a supper was served. After supper Mr J. Farmer, on behalf of those present, handed Private Keith Elliott a leather hold-all and Signalman O. S. Hood a leather writing case and paid a warm tribute to the personal qualities of the guests. Community singing was led by Mr Will Andrews. Mr and Mrs W. Haley were thanked for their hospitality. TOWN HALL “TURNED OUT NICE AGAIN.” At the matinee tomorrow afternoon and in the evening will be shown the greatest of George Formby’s pictures, “Turned Out Nice Again,” As champion “sucker” at the beginning, he comes out strong in the middle, fades into poverty, and emerges off top at the end, in this lavishly-mounted, fastmoving domestic comedy that makes as much as possible of Formby’s unique brand of comedy.
