CARTERTON

CALF CLUB CONTESTS JUDGING AT WAIHAKEKE. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the Waihakeke School on Saturday the judging in connection with the calf and lamb competitions took place. The judge of the calves, Mr W. H. Hall, said that- the calves were a very fine lot and the awards had been difficult to make. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. The following are the awards: — Lambs (judge, Mr J. Court): Alan Jensen 1, Noel Jensen 2, Graeme Cadwalladex* 3. Calves (judge, Mr W. H. Hall): Purebreds: Peter Davies 1, Delma Jensen 2. Grade: Noel Jensen 1, Jack Lukies 2, Melva Warrington 3. Handling and condition: Delma Jensen 1, Melva Warrington 2, P. Davies 3. Championship: P. Davies. DRUIDS’ LODGE The ordinary meeting of the Totara Druids’ Lodge last night was presided over by Arch Druid Brother H. J. Bassett. A vote of condolence was passed with Bro. Walter Hart in the bereavement caused by the death of his son, Major Irvine Hart, on active service.

With Bro. Rupert Goadin in the death of his brothe Albert, a vote of condolence was also carried. The circular letter advising Lodge members on military service how to apply to the Soldiers’ Financial Assistance Board, was read and approved. Sick pay and accounts for £lB 13s lOd were passed for payment. Members were reminded that the next Lodge meeting will be “quarter night,” when the nomination and election of officers will take place. Contributions are also due and payable at the meeting.

Personal Items. Mr W. Pearson, of Auckland, is visiting Carterton. Mrs Geo. F. Smith, who had been a patient in the Croydon Hospital, has returned to her home. Mr and Mrs L. Watson, of Waharoa, Rotorua, are on their annual leave, and are staying with Mr and Mrs S. Green, of Levin. Young Farmers’ Club. Mr- J. Rose presided over a ladge at-1 tendance of members of the Carterton’ branch of the Young Farmers’ Club. An apology for absence was received from Mr R. Andrews. Mr N. Lamont, of the Department cf Agriculture, gave a most interesting [address on serpentine super and the effect it had on increasing production. Messrs M. Renall, A. Stewart, V. Gates, A. Rayner and D. Fell were nominated to give addresses at the next meeting on farm products and production. Twenty-first Birthday Party. Miss Thelma Hayes was the guest of honour at a party given by her mother, Mrs E. Hayes, on Saturday evening in the Band Room, to celebrate her twen-ty-first birthday. A most enjoyable time was spent by the many friends present. After the cutting of the cake Miss Hayes was presented with a key to the house by her mother. Bouquets were presented to the guest of honour, her mother and grandmother, and a buttonhole to her grandfather. Between the dances items were contributed by Mrs Drysdale, J. Turley, E. Hayes and Messrs E. Woodley, A. Woodley, A. Kay, S. Wales, E. Hemmingson; a duet by Mrs C. Corlett and A. Kay and recitation by the Misses Simonick, N. Fletcher and. E. Dew. The music was supplied by Mr S. Hemi. The duties of M.C. were capably carried out by Mr A. Woodley of Masterton.

Miss Hayes received many beautiful gifts.
