BRISK ATTACKS
ON ENEMY RAILWAY COMMUNICATIONS
SUCCESSFUL DAYLIGHT OPERATIONS.
TWO GERMAN ARMED TRAWLERS
SET ON FIRE.
LONDON, October 22
Mustangs and Spii fires kept up their daylight offensive today against the Germans and gave them an uncomfortable time at vital points in Northern France. They struck also at the Germans’ vital communications in the occupied zone. One pilot attacked from so low a. level that his plane almost hit railway signals. Another Hew at tree-level and saw his bullets put an engine out of action. Goods trains in marshalling yards were also attacked, besides an antiaircraft tower. Unfortunately the lower was unmanned, as everybody had apparently taken cover. Two German armed trawlers off the French coast were set on fire. All these operations were carried out at the cost of one plane. AT LEAST TEN KILLED IN ENEMY DAY RAID ON BRITISH TOWN. RESCUERS STILL DIGGING. LONDON, October 22. Rescue workers are still digging for people trapped in buildings, after a daylight raid on an English south-east coast town. At least _ ten people are known to have been killed. The bombs were accompanied by cannon and machine-gun fire. NINE ENEMY FIGHTERS DESTROYED BY FLYING FORTRESSES. THREE OF THE BIG BOMBERS MISSING. The London headquarters of the United States Army Air Force states that in yesterday’s raid on Lorient nine enemy fighters were destroyed by Flying Fortresses in a running fight from the French coast to the vicinity of Quimperle. Three United States bombers are missing.
