CARTERTON
FIRE STATION WORK OF DEMOLITION. (“Times-Age” Special.) Further work has been carried out in pulling down the Carterton Fire Brigade station, and the whole of the top storey has now been removed. Until a new station has been erected the firefighting appliances are being housed in the South Wairarapa Motor Co.’s premises. The brigade’s siren and bell have been erected on a stand in Broadway. In the event of a fire, the siren can still be sounded 'from the Pdst Office.
BOWLING LABOUR DAY- TOURNEY. Entries are coming in freely for a rinks'or pairs tourney to be held-on the Carterton green on Monday next. Play will commence at 9 a.m. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. . Arch Druid Bro. FI. J. Bassett presided at the meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3, held last night. Reference to the death of Brother W. Morison was made by several members, who spoke of the years of useful service rendered by him to the Lodge in its early days. A vote of condolence with the. bereaved was carried in silence.
Grand Lodge forwarded forms for application to be made to the Soldiers’ Financial Assistance Board by next-of-kin of Lodge members on full-time military duty. It was reported that Bro. E. J. A. Miller was in the Masterton Hospital and was making good progress.
Sick pay and accounts amounting to £4 16s, 2d were passed for payment.
Japanese-made Shoe,
One of the workmen, employed at the Japanese prison camp has in his possession a shoe made in Japan, which was given him by one of the internees. The shoe has created considerable interest among residents of Carterton. It consists of a flimsy cloth top with a substantial rubber sole. ■ There are two compartments in the shoe, one being made entirely for the great toe and the, other for the remaining four toes. ' W.F.C.A. Repairs. Workmen from King’s Furnishing Co. are busily engaged in carrying out repairs to the premises of the Carterton branch of the W.F.C.A. The building was considerably damaged in the earthquake. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the School Committee, which was to have been held on Monday next, has been postponed till November 2. Personal Items. Mr E. Clough, postmaster at Clareville, has tendered his resignation, and this will take effect at the end of December. A meeting of settlers interested will be held in the near future to consider the position.
Among the soldiers returned from the Middle East is Private L. E. Burrows, son of Mr and Mrs A. Burrows, Tyneside, Te Wharau. Pte. Burrows was badly wounded in battle in the Desert, and is now an inmate of Wellington Hospital. Mr A. Jensen, of Belvedere Street, who has been an inmate of the Masterton Hospital, returned to his home last evening.
Clareville residents will entertain Pte. Jack Walker at the Clareville Hall tonight. Opportunity will also be taken by members of the Carterton Football Club to make him-a presentation, and members of the club are particularly asked to attend the gathering.
