CITIZENS’ SERVICE
WELL ATTENDED LAST NIGHT.
(“Times-Age” Special.) The citizens’ united wartime service, held in the Town Hall last evening, was well attended. The Rev J. R. Higgs gave an interesting address on the'Christian Order The prayers were led by the Rev H. Bloomfield and the lesson read by Mr Pligo’s. The’ combined choirs led the singing and an anthem was rendered by Mrs Houston, Misses O. Clapshaw, A. Cassidy, Messrs F. Clarke and S. Hunter. The accompanist was Miss Mutter.
BOWLING CLUB
OPENING OF THE SEASON. The Featherston Bowling Club opened its season on Saturday afternoon in brilliant sunshine. Rinks were present from the Masterton, Carterton, Greytown and Martinborough clubs. The president, Mr H. Rolls, welcomed the visitors and said that he hoped the gathering would only be the forerunner of many others during the season. He called upon the daughter (Miss Edna Higgison) of the oldest member of the club, to throw up the first kitty and bowl. He then declared the green open for play. The Rev W. F. Stent, representative of the Wairargpa Centre, presented two cups, the gift of Mr J. Moriarity, for the championship pairs, to the winners, Messrs W. H. Rowles' (lead) and J. Higgison (skip). The following were the results of games played: Featherston: Rolls, Talbot, Fuge, James (s),’ 29; Masterton, Kerslake, Hearle, Bannister, E. Reid (s) 24. Featherston, Lipinski, Hutana, W. Higgison, McNamara (s) 16; Martinborough, McMillan, Smith, Green, Boyd (s), 32. Featherston, Johnson, Robinson, Capt. Lysette, Bloxam (s), 19. Carterton, Bevan, Hart, De Lacey, Stent, 22; Featherston, J. Higgison, Lt. Harcombe, O'Neale, Thompson (s) 12; Greytown, Skeet, Stringfellow, Kiernan, McLeod, 33. Golf. The golf season was brought to. a close on Saturday when the following trophies were presented by the president (Mr J. W. Card):—Challenge Cup, H. Lovegrove; match played on handicap (W. Jeffrey’s trophy), H. R. Bloxam; medal competition (T. Hardie’s trophy), A. Clelland. Stableford (T. Lang’s trophy), FI. Lovegrove. Weekend stableford (president’s trophy), W. H. Rowles. Eclectic (secretar’s trophy), H. Lovegrove. The closing day competition, a Canadian foursome, was won by L. G. Benton and Mrs Lowe. Soldiers’ Dance. Another successful soldiers’ dance was held on Saturday night and was well attended. The music was supplied by Mrs Ashton’s orchestra. Mr F. Talbot was M.C. A lucky spot dance was won by Cpl. Burt and partner. The supper arrangements, were in the hands of the Junior Patriotic Committee. Personal Items. Mrs P. Galbraith, who has been on an extended visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs G. M. Browne, has returned to Christchurch. Miss Pohl, Lower Hutt, is the guest of Mrs F. Talbot. COSY THEATRE “THE GREAT MAN’S LADY.” The brilliant drama, “The Great Man’s Lady,” will head the programme at the Cosy Theatre on Wednesday. In it the leading roles are taken by Barbara Stanwyck, Brian Donlevy and Joel McCrea.
