HEAVILY BATTERED
JAPANESE BASE AT KISKA CARGO SHIP LEFT SINKING. RADIO STATION STRAFED. LONDON, October 9. American Liberator bombers, escorted by fighters, attacked enemy shipping in the harbour at Kiska, in the Aleutians. One cargo ship was left on fire and sinking and another was damaged. ■ A radio station was strafed and two seaplanes were’destroyed or battered. An earlier message states that, commenting on the recent operations in the Aleutians, the “New York Times” Washington correspondent says that experienced observers believe that as a result of the Midway battle the Japanese lost any chance to exploit the occupation of Kiska. A complete withdrawal from the Aleutians might be expected were not it a matter of facesaving, which is important in the Oriental mind.
In Ottawa, the Minister of the Navy, Mr Macdonald, announced that five Canadian warships co-operated with the United States forces which effected the recent landing in the Aleutians. He added that further details cannot be disclosed for reasons of security.
