BOYS OF EIGHTEEN
SAID TO BE FIGHTING IN NEW GUINEA UPROAR IN AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT. ARMY MINISTER’S STATEMENT CHALLENGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, October 9. There was uproar in the Australian House of Representatives when members questioned the Minister of the Army, Mr Forde, on the presence of boys of 18 years of age jn the Australian forces in New Guinea.
Mr Forde replied that the Comman-der-in-Chief had issued an instruction that no members of the Army under the age of 20 or who had less than six months’ training should be sent to a forward area. If it could be shown that the instruction had been disregarded in any particular case he would have jt investigated. A member answered: “I will show you hundreds of dozens of them.” A general demand was made that boys alleged to be with the forces in New Guinea should be immediately returned to Australia.
