AXIS LOSSES IN NORTH AFRICA AND OVER MEDITERRANEAN. TOBRUK AGAIN HEAVILY RAIDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 21. The lull on the Egyptian battlefield was broken yesterday only by an artillery duel in the southern sector, after'a night of activity by patrols all along the front. In the air things are more lively. Fighter-bombers had a number of tussles with the enemy. Two enemy fighters were shot down for certain and many more were damaged. Spitfires from Malta shot down two flying-boats over Sicily. Bombers gave Tobruk another pasting on Saturday night. The fires could be seen 30 miles away. DAMAGING BLOWS STRUCK BY FIGHTER-BOMBERS. ENEMY BASES LEFT IN FLAMES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) RUGBY, September 21. “Fighter-bombers were active over the battle area yesterday,” says a Cairo message, “and in a running fight one Messerschmitt was shot down and others were severely damaged. An enemy petrol bowser and four tanks were attacked by a pilot, who shot down a Messerschmitt, the bowser being left in flames.”
