SECRETARY CHARGED
ALLEGED SUBVERSIVE STATEMENT. ACCUSED SENT TO TRIAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., September 21. Charles Gough, branch secretary of the Dairy Factory Workers’ Union, Wellington, was charged before Mr Lawry, S.M.. under the Public Safety Emergency Regulations, with publishing a subversive statement to the employees of the Oroua Downs dairy factory on February 24, 1942, *m that he asked: “How the men liked working for £4 10s a week when their cobbers in Wellington got £lO for half the work. If they liked to strike they would have the cookies on their knees, and if they went on strike they could get anything they liked from the heads” Accused pleaded not guilty and elected to be.tried by jury. Evidence was given by the factory manager, G. R. Veale, and also_by employees as to how accused addressed the men. .. Detective Compton gave evidence that accused called at his office in March and said the statements m the information were a gross misrepresentation of the facts. Accused was committed for trial, bail of £5O being allowed.
