MAGISTRATE’S COURT

BUSINESS AT MASTERTON SITTING. MAORI SOLDIER SENT TO GAOL. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court was held this morning, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presiding. A soldier, Warren Nia Nia, was charged with the theft on September 14 of £1 in money, and on September 16, of £3 in money, the property of Stanley Berhahn. Senior Sergeant C. Murphy said the accused had taken the money from a wallet belonging to a tent mate. In regard to the second charge, the numbers of the notes had been taken and the accused, having been suspected, the notes were found in his possession. Accused had admitted the previous theft. Stating that there was too much dishonesty among troops, the Magistrate sent the accused to gaol for a' month on the second charge and to seven days on the first charge, the latter sentence to be served at the same time.

Alexandei - Thompson Hausmann, charged with failing to give way to a vehicle approaching on his*Tight, was fined 30s with costs IQs.

The District Traffic inspector, Mr W. G. Milne, proceeded against Robert James Clarke for having no heavy traffic licence. Defendant was fined-' £l, with costs 10s.

On a. charge of failing to give way to traffic at an intersection, Douglas William Stewart was fined £2, with costs 10s. For having no driver’s licence defendant was fined £l, with costs 10s. CIVIL CASES. i Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil claims: —Robert Walter Ferris versus Sydney Freeman,- £3 19s lid, costs £1 13s 6d; Thos. Borthwick and Sons (Aust.), Ltd., versus J. C, Tipping, £l6 : 16s 3d, costs £2 14s.
