MANY APPEALS
EXPECTED AGAINST LATEST BALLOT CALL' BIG PROPORTION OF FARMERS AND LAND WORKERS. OTHERS IN ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES. ’ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day. Many appeals by or for men called for service in the latest “Gazette” are expected. It has been unofficially stated that 60 per cent of the men last called up were appealed for. It was estimated today that on this occasion the figure probably would be 80 per cent. A big proportion of those called are farmers or workers on farms, many others are in essential industries, and many more in executive posts in factories, shops and offices. Of a dozen men consulted today, all are appealing or being appealed for by their employers, many of whom are already on skeleton staffs and will feel the loss of further men heavily. Besides those whose service may be excused or postponed on appeal, many of those called are already serving in the forces. Some have been in khaki ever since the mobilisation of the National Military Reserve and Territorial Forces in December, and others since the National Military Reserve was absorbed in the new Territorial, units formed in January.
