CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times- Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge was held last evening, being presided over by P.G. Bro. H. J. Rathbone. A vote of condolence was passed to Bro. K. G. Fairbrother in connection with his recent bereavement. Sick pay amounting to £l5 Gs 8d was ordered to be paid. ' It was reported that Bro. R. J. Warrington had been injured in a football match in Wellington and that he was an inmate of the Wellington Hospital. It was decided to forward this week Christmas parcels to members serving with the armed forces overseas.

PLUNKET SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING OF BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society was held yesterday afternoon when there were present: Mesdames Candy, Dyer, Armstrong, Montgomery, Udy and Trapp. Apologies were received from Mesdames Steel and Wells. The nurse’s report for August was as follows: —New cases: Mothers, 3; babies, 3. Visits to homes: Adults, 8; babies, 38; older children, 16. Visits to rooms: Adults, 81; babies, 69; older children, 25. Test scales lent, 3 times; telephone calls, 21. Arrangements were made for “Daffodil Day” at Middle Run on Saturday, September 19. The secretary reported the receipt of £45 from the T. G. Macarthy Trust. P. & A. Society, The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society will be held in the P. & A. building on Saturday next at 10.30 a.m. Social Gathering. The Clareville Hall was well filled last evening when the residents of the district entertained Lance Corporal F. Rzoska and Pilot Officer E. Thompson. Dancing was enjoyed until after midnight to music supplied by Mrs Rogers, of Dalefield. Extras were played by soldier members of the audience. Mr K. H. Reid, on behalf of the residents of Clareville, presented each guest with a useful gift. Mrs Corbet, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, handed a parcel of woollen garments to each man. Supper was provided by a ladies’ committee. Personal Items. A party was given by Mr and Mrs F. H. Morris, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, on Saturday night in honour of their son Leonard. There was a large number of relations and friends present. The guest received many useful presents. Private Morris was presented with a cigarette case and a wallet by the Mayor of Carterton (Mr D. L. Taverner) on behalf of the citizens at the Carterton Borough Council Chambers. On behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs Hodder presented him with a parcel of woollies. The gifts were greatly appreciated by the recipient. The residents of Belvedere and Carrington have decided to entertain Privates G. Couper and J. Garrett at a social gathering. Pte. Brian Spooner, of Carterton, who had been in the employ of Mr W. H. Day, grocer, Greytown, for a number of years and who has been in the Armed Forces for the past 12 months, was last week entertained by many of his friends at the Working Men’s Club, Grevtown. and presented with a money belt. In the evening, together with other' soldiers, he was entertained at a dance in the Town Hall and was presented by the Mayor (Mr Horton) with a leather writing companion.
