GUIDE CEREMONY

PRESENTATION OF CHEQUE. FUNDS FOR REST HUTS. At Government House, Wellington, on Saturday an interesting and spectacular ceremony took place when the cheque for £3628, which was raised >->y the Guides throughout Now Zealand was handed over to the Governor-Gen-eral, Sir Cyril Newell. A party of twenty-five Guides and Guiders from Masterton took part in the ceremony. When their Excellencies appeared on the steps they were greeted with cheers by the Guides us they ran to take up their position in traditional horseshoe formation around the colours. The ceremony was then commenced by the singing of God Save the King, all standing at attention as the thirty flags of the companies present were dipped in salute. Miss Herrick, the Chief Commissioner, asked his Excellency to accept the cheque. She spoke of the willingness with which the Guides had set about raising the £2400 which was asked for to build rest huts for the fighting forces. At first it was thought that the sum was too large for the Guides to raise by their own efforts, but she was glad to say that the sum had been exceeded by over £lOOO. The cheque was then preesnted to his Excellency by a Ranger, a Guide and a Brownie. In thanking the Guides for the cheque on behalf of the Patriotic Council, the Governor spoke of the high esteem in which the Guide movement was held, of the fine work being done by the Guides in training the children and of his wish to see every girl in New Zealand a Guide. During the inspection of the companies that followed, the Commissioners were introduced to Sir Cyril and Lady Newell and their Excellencies also spoke to many of the Guides. The Masterton Company was congratulated on its prowess at net-making and the amount raised towards the huts. The ceremony was brought to a close by the singing of “God Defend New Zealand” and marching off the colours.
