GREYTOWN
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age”' Special.) The annual meeting of the Greytown Presbyterian Church was held on Wednesday night, the Rev. C. W. R. Madill (Martinborough) presiding. A vote- of condolence was passed to the Rev. A. J. Preston in his recent bereavement. The communion roll showed a membership of 56. Thanks were expressed to the organists- IMr R. H. Anker, and Miss E. Gregor), and to those connected with the various activities of the church and Sunday school. The managers' report showed an improved state of affairs. The response to the appeal I for more subscriptions had borne fruit, and ! the collections throughout had increased. Assets were set down at £2,837 16s 6d and liabilities £147 Is 9d (debt on the Manse). The P.W.M.U. report stated that a very busy year had been experienced. The Sabbath school report showed there were 44 children! on the roll. Thanks were expressed to the Ladies’ Guild for providing each child with a prize at the end of the year and to the teachers and various helpers. The report of the Ladies' Guild disclosed that there were 27 members. Thanks were tendered to Mr and Mrs A. Johnson, Mesdames McLeod and Parker and other in connection with a garden party held. The election of officers resulted as follows: .Managers, Mesdames Johnson and Bower, Messrs Jas. Todd and J. Todd (with power to add); treasurer, Mr N. S. McLeod (re-elected) secretary and auditor, Mr J. F. Wallis (re-elected). The ladies provided supper which concluded a most successful meeting. Social Gathering. The Greytown Town Hall was packed last evening when the Patriotic Committee held a social gathering and dance, the proceeds from which are to be given to Mr and Mrs H. Manihera, who lost all their clothes, goods, etc., in the last earthquake when their house was destroyed by fire. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) expressed thanks to all present for their assistance. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., expressed his pleasure in the response that had been accorded the appeal for assistance. Mr and Mrs Manihera were well known to the soldiers who visited Papawai. The Manihera family had been always willing to help any worthy object and now the residents of the district were pleased to assist them. He had much pleasure in handing Mr Manihera a cheque from sympathetic friends. Mr Manihera was received with musical honours. His first words were ‘‘Come on. boys, let us sing ‘The Maori Battalion.' ” His request was immediately responded to. efter which he suitably returned thanks for the gift. Personal. A social gathering will be held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening when the guest of honour will be Mr W. 11. Day. who has retired from the secretaryship of the church vestry after many years of faithful service. TOWN HALL “A WOMAN’S FACE.” Joan Crawford has the leading role in that brilliant drama. “A Woman's Face.” which will be- shown at the Town Hall tonight. She is ably assisted by Melvyn Douglas, Conrad Veidt, and Osa Massen.' A March of Time, “Sailors with Wings," will also be shown.
