BOMBED & SUNK

GERMAN SUBMARINE OFF COAST OF BRAZIL. AMERICAN AIRMAN’S FEAT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SAN SALVADOR (Brazil), Aug. 20. Mr Jack Lacey, the pilot of a Catalina flying-boat, has described how he sank a German submarine off the coast of Bahia after the five Brazilian ships were sunk. Mr Lacey was patrolling the coast when ho sighted a German submarine with seven of the crew on deck. He dived and machinegunned the submarine, which returnsgd his fire from a deck gun. Two of the crew of the submarine were hit and fell overboard. The hatch of the conning tower closed so quickly that the other five remained on deck as the submarine submerged. The plane then dropped four bombs, and scored at least one direct hit, which capsized the submarine, after which oil and wreckage floated to the surface.
