GREYTOWN

MEN’S HOCKEY COMPETITION ADVANCED A STAGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The men’s competition was advanced a stage on Saturday, two matches being played locally. In one, A scored a second-halt win over F, mainly by improved defence ano better forward work, by, 3 goals to 1. The game, though sternly contested,. war not a oood exhibition in that combination generalfy was lacking. Players failed to make use of a smooth surface to maintain ball control. The other game. Greytown v. C, was a solid one, in which the local team was better than its opponents in all departments of play, and won by 5 goals to 1. Thanks to good all-round understanding, backing up, anticipation and good defence, the C forwards dit. not get many really dangerous breakaways. The local inside forwards, among whom was Turbltt, of All Black fame, once in possession were always dangerous. The local halfback line went very well, while the three full-backs performed splendidly. Anker at right half has a good sense of anticipation. W° Trotman at centre half keeps his position well. Jury in the backs plays a very fine stick indeed, and for his age is an excellent back. McKenzie at third full-back is very reliable. This is the local team’s fourth consecutive win. The team has scored 23 goals for, and had 6 registered against them. Their only superior at present is the Carterton team, which undoubtedly plays the best balanced hockey. At one stage C was the best Service team, but of late sickness has made serious inroads into the personnel. A on the other hand are playing much better now than previously. F and D play moderately good hockey, while B and E seldom seem to be able to get a satisfactory combination together. For all that, the competition, in which there are still two games to play, has proved interesting, and has catered for over 80 players each Saturday since May 16. Next week's games are:—At Grey town: Dv. E, at 1.30 p.m.; B v. G, at 3 p.m.. At Carterton: H v. F, at 1.30; A v. C.

Thanks to the care which has been taken in past seasons, as well as the attention given this season, Greytown now boasts three hockey fields, two of which can definitely be classed as the best in the Wairarapa. The ladies’ ground presents a splendid surface al present. The responsibility for this lies mostly with Mr G. Maloney, who has gone to considerable trouble this year to see that the teams were provided with good playing facilities. TOWN HALL AN EXCELLENT PICTURE. At the Town Hall tomorrow night patrons will have presented to them, “Dr. Kildare’s Crisis,” which is another of that excellent Kildare series of pictures, the leading roles being taken by Lionel Barrymore, Lew Ayres, Laraine Day and Robert Young.
