QUADRANGULAR BASKETBALL TOURNEY CONTESTS IN MASTERTON. WELLINGTON EAST THE WINNERS. A quadrangular basketball tournament between teams representing the Wellington East Girls’ College, Hutt Valley High School, Dannevirke High School and Wairarapa College was played on the Wairarapa College grounds yesterday afternoon and this morning. The games as a whole were very even and a distinct improvement in form was noticed compared with the last tournament held in Masterton four years ago. Yesterday Hutt Valley High School scored a last minute victory against Dannevirke by 13 goals to 12, scoring the winning goal right on the call of time. Wellington East accounted for Wairarapa by 16 goals to 8. After an evenly-contested game until well after half time, the Wellington team struck form and rattled on goals in the last ten minutes. This morning Dannevirke beat Wairarapa by 14 goals to 13. Actually, when time was called the scores were even but play continued until the next goal was scored. Wellington East, by defeating Hutt Valley by 17 goals to 10, won the tournament. Miss Joan Gemmell refereed yesterday’s games and Mrs Gifford and Miss Gemmell officiated this morning. Those in charge of the teams were: Wellington East, Miss Dixon; Hutt Valley, Miss Mather; Dannevirke, Miss Coe: Wairarapa, Miss W. McLennan. RUGBY MATCH WAIRARAPA BEAT RONGOTAI. The Wairarapa College First Fifteen defeated Rongotai College in a match played at Masterton yesterday by 11 points to 6. Wairarapa had the advantage in the forwards, particularly in the loose rushes but the visitors’ backs were at all times dangerous, the five-eighth especially. Wairarapa College won the toss and elected to play into a particularly unpleasant side wind. Plav opened slowly but from the first it was evident that Wairarapa had a marked superiority in the forwards. The backs, however, were inferior to those of Rongotai as they lacked combination. Early in the first spell Colquhoun led a wonderful back rush resulting in the wingscoring a try for Rongotai. This was not converted. Score. Rongotai 3, Wairarapa nil. Shortly afterwards Welch, the Wairarapa full-back, got the best kick of the day over the posts, equalising the score. Had it not been for good tackling by Wairarapa forwards Rongotai would have broken through twice before half-time. McDonald rushed through to score a very fine corner try. which was not converted. Score, Wairarapa 6, Rongotai 3. Half-time saw the score unCh Immediately after the recommencement of play good passing by Wairarapa allowed Hourigan to supply the opening for a try which was scored by O’Brien. AVelch converted it, making the score AVairarapa 11, Rongotai 3. Most of the second spell was characterised by Rongotai’s good back combination. This was offset, however by AVairarapa’s forwards. Lahood managed to find a way through and Hudson, who had replaced an injured player, scored a good try. bringing the score to its final total: AVanarapa 11. Rongotai 6. ' The Rongotai backs deserve special mention for their outstanding combination. For AVairarapa AVelch, Hourigan, McDonald, as well as the forwards, played very well. The visiting team was in charge of Mi Herron. , , , , Last night the Rugby and basketball teams were entertained at a .dance held m the College Assembly Hall.
