ALLEGED GERMAN PROGRESS
(Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.)
LONDON, August 7.
The Vichy radio declared that the Germans have reached the Yeisk-Te-hirskaya railway at some points, isolating Russian troops in the Yeisk area. The fall of Yeisk is imminent. The radio added that the German column which captured Voroshilovsk has now passed Kursavka. Voroshilovsk is aflame. Russian armoured trains are steaming up and down the main Caucasus Railway, in the region of Armavir, firing on German spearheads with heavy guns, to cover Russian positions. Advanced elements of Von Kleist’s army are reported to have reached the outskirts of Armavir, on the east and west, directly threatening the centre of the Maikop oil district. GERMAN CLAIM PROGRESS BEYOND KUBAN RIVER. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 6. A German communique states: “We have captured Tehirskaya and reached the railway north-westward of the town, on a wide front. Our fast formations southward of Voroshilovsk are advancing over the Kuban River and have reached the main railway between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Heavy fighting continues in the Rzhev area.”
