CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE CHILDREN COLLECTING RUBBER AND PAPER. ESTABLISHMENT OF CLINIC. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee was held in the school last evening. Those present were: Messrs W. R. Nicol (in the chair), A. E. Nelson, S. C. Dixon, G. Masters, P. H. Shaw, G. Bilderbeck and T. A. Russell. An apology for absence was received from Mr A. I. Gibbs. The financial statement showed a satisfactory position. Accounts amounting to £lB 13s lOd were passed. Correspondence dealing chiefly with earthquake matters was read. This stated, inter alia, that the schoolbuildings were practically undamaged and quite safe. The headmaster, Mr E. G. Coddington, who was present, read his monthly report which showed the roll to be well maintained, being now 606. The attendance at both the main and side schools had been somewhat adversely affected by the prevalent sickness. Two members of the staff had also been affected and were absent for a while. Cocoa had been regularly served to children staying for lunch and since the beginning of June, 2000 cups of cocoa had been supplied to the children at -Jd per cup. Financially this was not a success but the committee would no doubt meet the deficiency. The children had collected quite a lot of scrap rubber which was being sent to the collecting depot. Waste paper was still being collected and handed in. The report also mentioned a very successful social evening held by Std. 6 pupils to raise funds for the school Service Club. The report was adopted. The representatives on the Central Dental Clinic Committee reported that the tentative school clinic committees were taking over control of the separate school clinics as from August 1. The matter of getting portion of a section turned over for vegetable growing was left to the secretary and Mr Shaw.
