CHIMNEY DAMAGE

FURTHER SURVEY BEING MADE COUNTRY AREAS SUFFER BADLY. TE PARAE ROAD BLOCKED. A further survey of chimney damage is to be made in Masterton, following on Sunday morning’s severe earthquake. This task is to be carried out by wardens, with a view to ascertaining any new circumstances which may have arisen. In most cases, it appears that chimneys which had only just been re-erected and had not had time to set suffered damage. Chimneys in the Homewood, Riversdale, Tinui, Taueru and Wangaehu areas are down in dozens, some to ground level. A lot of the restoration work accomplished in this district since the June earthquake has been undone again. The Te Parae Road, running from Taueru to Brancepeth, is blocked by a large slip about five chains wide. It is not known when the road will be reopened, as it will probably be necessary to construct a new section of roadway. The abutments of the Taueru Bridge have been badly cracked. Although cracks have appeared in roads in the Taueru and other districts, most of these are in fillings or bridge approaches, in more or less unstable land.

The task of demolishing the whole of the front portion of the Masterton Fire Brigade Station was commenced this morning. Following the earthquake on June 24, it had been decided to demolish the first floor only and this had been accomplished. Sunday morning’s earthquake, however, so badly damaged the remainder of the structure that its removal is necessary. The normal railway timetable was observed on the Wairarapa line today.
